Esther 2:1, Question 3. What does the verse mean that Achashverosh remembered Vashti?

  • The Targum Sheini’s version of the story has Achashverosh awakening from his drunken stupor completely oblivious to the fact that Vashti was gone. He “remembered” her in that he thought she was still very much a part of his life. This exacerbated his feelings of loss when he sobered up to the truth.
  • According to Rav Dovid Feinstein, Achashverosh, ever-concerned about the stability of his reign, remembered Vashti’s crucial role in establishing his royal authority.
  • As the Malbim points out, Achashverosh realized that Vashti’s unique physical characteristics and political contributions could not be easily replaced.
