Esther 3:9, Question 2. Why does Haman use the word “l’avdam” (“to destroy”) in his description of what he wants done to the Jews?

According to the Malbim, Haman intentionally used this word because it a homophone with “l’avdam” which is written with the letter ayin (“to enslave”) to allow for the possibility that the king may not agree with killing off the Jews. With this word, the king could be under the impression that Haman intended that the king should enslave the Jews.
